Ice Cream Maker Attachment

KitchenAid do not actually make a stand alone ice cream machine. What they do is produce an attachment that when hooked up to any of their stand mixers, turns it into an ice cream maker. So if you've set your heart on a Kitchen Aid ice cream maker, you will really need to go out and get yourself a KitchenAid mixer first, if you have not already got one of course. That in itself is not a bad thing because as mixers go, you could do a lot worse than any of the KitchenAid models.

The Kitchen Aid attachment is of the "stick the bowl in the freezer for 16 hours" variety of ice cream machines and as such is good for a 2 quart batch of delicious home made ice cream once a day or so. That's allowing for 30 minutes preparation time and then sticking the bowl back in the freezer for an hour or two to harden up the finished product. For, as is common with almost all the freezer bowl type ice cream makers, at the end of the mixing time the ice cream is at about soft serve consistency.

An important advantage KitchenAid gain over other brands by using an attachment added to their stand mixers are access to the more extensive speed control capabilites found on a mixer and not usually found on an ice cream maker.
