Rival Ice Cream Makers
Of all the brands available, Rival have the most extensive range of ice cream makers designed for home use, and are generally the most affordable. This remains true even when we treat White Mountain ice cream makers as a seperate brand, as we do on this site, even though they are part of the Rival group.
Another generalization we can make about Rival ice cream makers is that they are all motor powered. Rival have no doubt assesed that there is not really much of a future for hand cranked machines, and who can say that they are wrong.
So, lets have a look at the models available.
If you don't fancy using ice and rock salt as your coolant, Rival gives you a choice between gel canisters or gel discs, both of which need to be frozen in your freezer before you can start churning the cool stuff. With gel canisters, the whole mixing bowl goes into the freezer, which you may not be too happy about as they can take up quite a bit of room. Which is where gel discs come in, only the gel pack is frozen and then pops into the mixing bowl, a great saving in space in your freezer, but at what price you may wonder. There is always a trade off.

So, there are four gel canister models,
- the GC8101 at 1 quart
- the GC8151 at 1.5 quarts
- the GC8155 at 1.5 quarts and two mixing speeds and
- the GC8250 at 1.5 quarts and with a soft serve dispenser.
and two gel disc models
- the GC9101 at 1 quart capacity and
- the GC9151 at 1.5 quart capacity.
If ice and rock salt are your thing, there are also plenty of Rival ice cream makers in this category as well. Ice and salt ice cream makers also allow you to make larger batches and Rival have models for 4, 5 and 6 quart capacities.
